Tom Banton Limps to Middle With Injured Ankle, Smashes Run-a-Ball 28 in County Championship Title Clash

Somerset's Tom Banton showed his class with a battling 28 off 28 balls against Warwickshire despite limping to the crease with an injured ankle.

The right-hander hit four fours and a six in a typically aggressive innings, helping Somerset to reach 162-4 at stumps on day one of their LV= Insurance County Championship clash at Edgbaston.

Banton's innings was all the more impressive given he was clearly struggling with the ankle injury he sustained while fielding earlier in the day.

The 24-year-old received treatment on the boundary edge and initially left the field, but he returned to bat at number three and showed no ill effects with the bat.

Banton's knock was the highlight of a solid start to the match for Somerset, who won the toss and elected to bat.

Openers Tom Lammonby (37) and Matt Renshaw (29) put on 64 for the first wicket, before Banton and James Hildreth (26 not out) added a further 47 for the third wicket.

Warwickshire's bowlers toiled hard on a slow pitch, with Liam Norwell (2-33) and Nathan McAndrew (1-37) the pick of the attack.

But Somerset will be pleased with their day's work and will be confident of building a big first-innings total on day two.

The match is well-poised heading into the second day, with both sides still in with a chance of victory.
